Types of UTP cable

There are 2 types of UTP cable that I know,

- cross-over cable
- straight-through cable

When it comes to connect network equipment such as switch, router and many more we use this type of cable. We get to differentiate this types of cable by using color scheme of this cable, you can take a look at these table below .

Standard, Straight-Through Wiring (both ends are the same)

Cross Over Cable (T568B):

Cross Over Cable (T568B):

When do we use straight-through cable and cross-over cable? Actually, it depends on equipment we want to connect, i divide it to 2 categories.

Categories A

-PC
-Bridge
-Router

Categories B

-Switch

When we want to connect equipment from same category, we use cross-over cable. If we want to connect equipment from different categories, we use straight-through cable. It’s easy concept to remember. But now, most network equipment is equipped with auto-MDIX that accept all cable type.

Auto-MDIX (automatic medium-dependent interface crossover) is a computer networking technology that automatically detects the required cable connection type (straight-through or crossover) and configures the connection appropriately, thereby removing the need for crossover cables to interconnect switches or connecting PCs peer-to-peer. When it is enabled, either type of cable can be used and the interface automatically corrects any incorrect cabling. For Auto-MDIX to operate correctly, the speed on the interface and duplex setting must be set to “auto”. Auto-MDIX was developed by HP engineers Dan Dove and Bruce Melvin.

~ susunan kaler yg membezakan kedua2 cable nih..

~ straight-through cables : nak sambung pd alat yg tak sama (cth: dr PC ke Router)

~ cross-over cables : nak sambung pd alat yg sama (cth: dr PC ke PC)

**console (rollover)cables : digunakan bila nak configure (cth: dr PC ke Router)

**serial cables : Router ke Router
